Termites

Termites are an ongoing issue for structures located in southern California.

The Association strives to address this serious threat to our community. The Board has contracted with a termite service, Accurate Termite and Pest Control.

If you observe ANY signs of termite activity (inside or outside of your unit), immediately call Accurate Termite and Pest Control at (949) 837-6483 and request an inspection. Be sure to identify your unit as part of RDTA. Giselle is the rep for RDTA.

The RDTA policy with Accurate Termite and Pest Control covers inspections AND treatment for drywood and subterranean termites anywhere inside or outside of structures (this excludes fencing and patio covers).

Tips for what to look for to recognize termite activity.
DRYWOOD TERMITES
  • Cherry colored with four equal sized wings
  • Tiny holes in wall with granules that look like ground pepper deposited below
  • Pellets have six equal sides
  • Eat erratic channels, and pack with pellets
  • Swarm in October and November
  • Wood structures that are "hollow" due to interior substance eaten away.
SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES
  • Greyish yellow with four equal sized wings
  • Mud tunnels or tubes, normally in dark, moist places
  • Eat along grain of wood, packing with mud to protect themselves
  • Swarm in March and April

General information on treatment methods and residual expectations.
DRYWOOD TERMITES
  • Drill into infested area - wood or drywall into wood behind
  • Inject chemical
  • Immediately kills termites in that area
  • Residual effect of treatment lasts up to 2 to 2 1/2 years, depending on which chemical was used
  • Normally drywood termites do not return to an area with "dead bodies"
SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES
  • Drill through slab to dirt
  • Pressure inject chemical into dirt under slab
  • Leaves chemical barrier (between dirt and your unit) to kill any termites entering that area, which prevents new termites from entering your unit
  • Note that the treatment does not immediately kill any termites that are already in your unit. They are killed when they return to the dirt area that has been treated.
  • Residual effect of treatment lasts up to 2 to 2 1/2 years, depending on the strength of the chemicals used. After that time repeat treatment may be needed.
  • If termite infestation can be accessed directly, treatment will involve digging a trench, flooding it with chemicals, and filling in.
